Today is Chinese new year eve already and I still don't feel the festive mood inside me. Is it because I've been busy with school work the past few days and the prospect of more tests after this term break? Or is it because I'm getting sick and tired of these festive occasions? I believe it's a combination of the 2 factors although the latter predominates. Chinese New Year means good food and angpows but also means having to meet relatives who exist only during this 2-day period. I will have to dig deep into my memory bank to try to recall whether these people are my relatives or not and even have to remember what to call them. And the irritating part comes when all of them ask the same standard questions every year. " Where are you studying now?" "Which course are you in?" "Got girlfriend?" and a host of other questions. And there is also the expectation that you socialise with all the other relatives. This is the most depressing part of CNY because there's really nothing to talk about and I usually end up communicating with the television. CNY is becoming really predictable and the sense of anticipation is dwindling down the years.
