First World country?
I recently saw 2 articles in the papers that left me feeling sad that these things should happen in Singapore. The first one concerns the touting by cabbies in Singapore, especially towards foreigners. They do not charge by the meter and instead charge exorbitant rates when foreigners board their cabs. I would like to think that this practice only exists in more backward countries where the law is not so strictly enforced. Honesty and efficiency are the hallmarks of our country and I hope this problem will be eradicated as we have a reputation to uphold.
The second one is on motorcycle gangs becoming more aggressive in Singapore. there are even cases where women carrying handbags are robbed by criminals riding on motorcycles. One would think that such a problem will never exist in Singapore given our tough laws. Unfortunately, there are such cases and it reminds me of Johor, the Wild Wild West up north of our borders.
Singapore must not be allowed to degenerate into a backward country where corruption and crime are common practices. I will migrate to Malaysia if that happens. After all, what will be the difference between them and us if these practices continue?
